Open-channel ultrasonic sensor or standard level sensor?

When to use a Parshall flume and when to measure a reservoir's level directly.

01

Measurement principle

Ultrasonic sensors emit high-frequency waves and measure the reflected signal's return time. This determines the distance to a surface without touching the liquid.

02

Open channel with a Parshall flume

When measuring flow in open channels, liquid height at a specific point in the flume is converted into flow. The flume's controlled geometry makes this relationship predictable.

  • Wastewater treatment
  • Irrigation channels
  • Process inlets and outlets
  • Flow measurement and totalization

03

Standard level sensor

For tanks, silos and reservoirs, a standard sensor directly measures the distance to the surface and calculates level or volume from the supplied geometry.

04

Selection criteria

Use the open-channel solution when flow is the main variable. Use a standard level sensor to read height or volume in vessels. Correct installation and configuration are essential in both cases.
